Award of the 2018 Ieke van den Burg Prize for Research on Systemic Risk

11 October 2018

After a highly competitive selection process, which involved multiple peer reviews by members of the Advisory Scientific Committee (ASC), the 2018 Ieke van den Burg Prize for Research on Systemic Risk has been awarded to Kilian Huber for his paper entitled “Disentangling the effects of a banking crisis: evidence from German firms and counties”. The paper was recently published in the American Economic Review.

The winning paper was announced at the ESRB Annual Conference, which took place on 27 and 28 September 2018. A video of the announcement by Javier Suárez, Chair of the ASC, and a presentation of the paper by the winning author is available on YouTube.

The ASC also decided to recognise the quality of four additional papers, which are runners-up for the prize:

  • “Does size matter? Bailouts with large and small banks” by Eduardo Dávila and Ansgar Walther
  • “Money runs” by Giorgia Piacentino and Jason Donaldson
  • “Engineering lemons” by Petra Vokatá
  • “Are business and credit cycles synchronised internally or externally?” by Łukasz Kurowski and Karol Rogowicz

In addition, some of the other shortlisted papers will also be published as part of the ESRB Working Paper Series.
